Breaking the Industry Mold with

3D Scanning Technology

Solar Plastics, Inc. is a global leader and supplier in the production of custom-engineered rotationally molded plastic parts, ranging from fuel tanks and utility vehicle cargo boxes to dispenser cabinets and refrigerator unit covers.

Solar Plastics President Rick Carlsen attributes part of his company’s continued growth to 3D scanning. Earlier this year, Solar Plastics contacted Exact Metrology in order to upgrade its ROMER Arm from a manual, touch point model to a new ROMER 7535 SI. This ROMER Absolute Arm with integrated scanner can be used for 3D digitizing, modeling, point cloud inspections or reverse engineering.

Using the equipment multiple times per day, Carlsen says his company has already applied the advance technology on up to 100 jobs primarily for initial sample inspection and reporting or first article validation. He credits one of his inspection technicians for pushing for the purchase and touting the benefits and advantages that the 3D scanning equipment would bring to the shop floor.

Carlsen sees the real advantage being the acquisition of "millions upon millions more data points leading to superior technical insight." He goes on to say, "We can now collect so much more data that is easily stored that it’s a quantum leap from where we were before. We’ve found that the approval of new projects is quicker and easier."

While the use of 3D scanning equipment isn’t prevalent in the rotomolding industry currently, Carlsen says it should start trending upwards. He is currently serving as the President on the 2013 – 14 Board of Directors for the Association of Rotational Molders (ARM) and at its upcoming Rotoplas Exposition October 6 – 9 in Rosemont Il., he believes "Some molders will have an eye popping experience on what they’ve been missing if they stop by the Exact Metrology Booth."

Exact Metrology is on the Move!

Same Address for New Website; New Address for Cincinnati Office

Things are moving fast around Exact Metrology these days with everything aimed at creating a more satisfying customer experience.

Our web address is still the same, but once you arrive you’ll find it’s been completely remodeled based on a blueprint emphasizing information architecture. The new site houses a lot more useful information, a lot more appealing photos, and a lot more helpful functionality.

If you’re a Do-it-Yourselfer you’ll definitely want to check out our re-tooled "Used Equipment" Section where we have plenty of great deals listed, including:

  • 2013 ROMER Absolute 7530-SI Portable CMM Arm 3D Laser Scanner
  • 2010 Leica AT901-MR Laser Tracker t-Probe T-Scan Portable CMM
  • 2011 Surphaser 25HSX IR_X Long Range Laser Scanner

Our "Quote Requests" have also been re-designed for more convenience and simpler submission.

11575 Goldcoast Drive in Cincinnati’s Sycamore Township is the new address for our Ohio location— just north of the 71/275 Interchange.

Exact Metrology Cincinnati Location

With 11,800 total square feet, the new facility will better showcase Exact Metrology’s expanding line of equipment by manufacturers like:

Artec • Breuckmann • Geomagic • Leica • NDI • ROMER • Surphaser and Z-Cat.

Inside you’ll find our state-of-the-art lab for demos and services. A huge training room to support larger classes is where we will provide hands-on hardware instruction for 3D scanners, white light scanners, articulated arms, optical trackers, laser trackers and more. Regular 3D software classes will also be held here.

We were pretty much forced to move because of the ongoing expansion of our business. We are constantly taking on new products and software which is driving customer demand up. In addition, we’re close to signing a deal to represent a line of Computed Tomography (CT) Scanners. This method of measurement allows for the 3D Scanning of industrial parts’ interiors without any harm or destruction to the parts themselves.

In the meantime, our Wisconsin location continues to grow as well. The building we own there, at 20515 Industry Avenue in Brookfield, has enough square footage under roof to double its operations.

Here’s a look at some of the items we’ve been requested to quote on scanning recently:
